About The Association

The Trout Lake Community Centre Association (TLCCA) is the charity that has been working behind the scenes here since 1956!

The first centre on this site opened in 1964 and was known as Grandview Community Centre. It was built thanks to active community pressure, and with most of the necessary funds raised locally. TLCCA also advocated passionately for and contributed financially to the construction of our current stunning building.

In other words, on behalf of this community, TLCCA has successfully collaborated with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation for 60 years!

Vancouver is one of few cities that offer recreation programming via partnerships with volunteer-driven not-for-profit societies. Community Centre Associations are financially independent (with some obligations via our agreement with the Park Board).

This type of partnership allows us to ensure that the revenue generated through programs and rentals stays in our community and is invested in things like family activities, special events, facility enhancements, artist residencies, etc.

Community Partners

Trout Lake strives to be a hub for all your recreation needs! To that end, we  work in collaboration with many dynamic community partners, including those on the following list.

The Centre

Trout Lake Community Centre is a gorgeous space offering recreation, education, and connection for all ages. Located beside beautiful John Hendry Park, our facility includes a full gymnasium, ice rink, fitness centre, multipurpose rooms, and leisure spaces. Trout Lake Community Centre is collaboratively operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Trout Lake Community Centre Association (TLCCA).

Since opening in 2012, the centre has been a hub for creativity, activity, and belonging. It is a place where neighbours come together to learn, play, and grow. We now proudly offer over 200 programs for all ages.

Watch the Happy 10th (Plus) Anniversary, Trout Lake Community Centre film made to honour the community volunteers, recreation staff, and officials whose combined spirit brought a dream to fruition. Learn how this hub was and continues to be a passion project for the people behind the scenes who invite you to make Trout Lake your home away from home, as they do.

Sustainability & Accessibility

We’re committed to environmental responsibility and accessibility in everything we do. From building design to program delivery, we aim to create a healthier, more inclusive future for our community members.

Trout Lake Community Centre was designed with sustainability in mind. It features natural lighting, energy-efficient systems, and environmentally friendly materials to reduce our ecological footprint.

The facility is LEED Gold Certified, designed by Walter Francl Architecture Inc. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability. Sustainable buildings save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people.

Certification comes only after building projects are assessed by how well they address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials and indoor environmental quality.

We prioritize waste reduction, energy conservation, and sustainable operations across our programs. Our initiatives encourage both staff and community members to make eco-conscious choices.

Greener art

The team at Trout Lake has been transforming our Art Studio to include more wooden toys such as Grapat Mandala, gorgeous wooden loose parts and shapes, Magic Wood tree house building set, wooden beads, and magnifiers.

  • We have replaced plastic with metal bowls and trays for the children to use for art making, exploring play, and sorting.
  • We made a children’s puppet theatre and hope to expand on our puppet collection.
  • In terms of art supplies, we have eliminated glitter/glitter glue and small plastic from the cupboards, and have replaced them with more sustainable options such as natural materials and fibers.
  • We also encourage outdoor exploring and using natural materials found locally.

Our birthday packages promote sustainability by eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging reusable tableware and decorations. We’re proud to celebrate responsibly!

Balloons are also now banned in all rentals and birthday parties to further minimize our environmental footprint. Instead, please consider choosing a more sustainable alternative. Some ideas to consider:

  • Reusable/thrifted/borrowed decorations
  • Paper decorations, potentially crafted by hand, that can be later recycled
  • Live or potted plants that double as eco-friendly party-favors
  • Dried flowers or garlands that are long lasting and compostable
  • Lighting alternatives such as paper lanterns or LED string lights

Or get creative and DIY your celebration!
