Kelly has practiced Chinese martial arts, with an emphasis on the internal styles, for over 30 years. Studying under Master Liang Shouyu, she began with wushu basic training, Yang style taiji (Tai Chi), and Qigong. Her teacher introduced her to other great masters including He Weiqi, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming, Madame Wang Jurong, Yang Zhenduo, Chen Zhenglei, Sam Masich, Chen Xiaowang, and others.

Under all of these great teachers, Kelly studied empty hand and weapons forms of the Chen, Yang, Wu, and Sun styles of taiji, as well as Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, and Water Style, and developed a practice of Qigong and meditation.

In the 1990s, Kelly had a very successful competition career. She was twice member of the Canadian National Wushu Team and won many medals and “Grand Champion” titles in international competitions.
